San Francisco traffic ticket? What to do next.

Quick answer

A San Francisco moving-violation ticket is handled by the San Francisco Superior Court. Find the due date on your notice, then pay, request traffic school or contest. Confirm the court's current address, phone and hours on its official website.

Do this first

  1. Find the due date on your citation or notice.
  2. Confirm the court named on it. For a San Francisco ticket, that is the San Francisco Superior Court.
  3. Open the court's official website at sf.courts.ca.gov and look for its traffic information.
  4. Choose one option: pay, traffic school or contest.
  5. Act before the due date.

What the court handles

Your notice tells you the violation, the amount and the court. The same Vehicle Code rules apply to a San Francisco ticket as to any other California infraction. Read the page for your violation: CVC 22350, CVC 22349 or CVC 21453.

Get current court details

This page lists no address, phone number, hours or room numbers for the San Francisco court. Get them from the court's official site, where they stay current.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my due date?

The due date is on your citation or court notice. If you cannot find it, look up your case in the court's online services on its official website, or contact the court. Use the phone number and hours on the court's own site.

Can I contest in writing?

Vehicle Code 40902 lets a defendant elect a trial by written declaration upon any alleged infraction, with bail submitted. Check the San Francisco court's website for how it accepts the request and by when. Our written declaration guide explains the forms and the steps.

What happens if I ignore a San Francisco ticket?

Missing the date can lead to a failure to appear. Under Vehicle Code 40508, willfully breaking a written promise to appear is a misdemeanor, and the court can add a civil assessment and the DMV can suspend a license. Read the failure to appear guide and contact the court.

Can someone appear for me?

Ask the court what it allows for your case. Some firms state that an attorney appears on your behalf for infractions, so ask each one. Compare what each firm covers in writing before you hire. The lawyers page lists questions to ask.
